افتراضي before I embraced Islam

From Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we present this Muslim family.
Brother `Abdel Latif, 35 years old, narrates his life story before and till he embraced Islam:
- I had witnessed many tragedies before I embraced Islam. Following my delivery, my parents separated and we lived in poverty. When I was 6 years old, I saw my father for the fist time in my life. He stayed several years with us. It was a tough and hard period of our life because my father was drunkard. When he was back home, troubles were to come in his company and we became surrounded by sadness and fear. Many questions were raised in my mind.
- Why does this happen to us? Why is father like that?
Of course, I have had no answer for such questions because I was too young.
Afterwards, my mother decided to leave home without father’s consent. My brothers and I were teenagers and we used to have many quarrels with one another.
My brothers began to drink wine and they went away just like my father did. One of them became depressed and finally he tried to commit suicide, but I managed to rescue him. My sister tried to commit suicide as well. All of us turned to be drug addicts. Upon that, I started to be aware of my life.
I left home and went to Belgium where I worked for a tiny local newspaper. I started to write short topics as I was not well-qualified to be a journalist.
Then, I said to myself: this is not my way. I should start from the very beginning and decide an end for my life.
I began to inquire: Is there any life other than this present one? I wanted to know the answer to this question. I went to a library and got the comparative religions books. First, I found a book on Yuga which I started immediately to study. Then, I found one on Hinduism. I read as much as I could on this religion, but I was not satisfied. After that, I studied Buddhism, then Christianity, then Judaism. These studies took me about ten full years. At that time I used to be a member of the Communist Party and thus I studied the works of Lenin and Marx. In spite of all that I was not satisfied or convinced till I found my way to Islam.
before I adhere to Islam, I used to feel that this life of mine is not everything, there should be another thing to do.
I went back to my mother who was living alone .... (Where’s sympathy and mercy?), I stayed with her, and completed my education on children till I was qualified to be a teacher.
I felt then to have something and that I could start a new good life. And, I got to know my wife who was a teacher as well.
After we had fulfilled our marriage we got acquainted to some neighbors, a Muslim Turkish family who study German. They were kind and I felt they had some kind of feeling that was unknown to us. That feeling gave them happiness and psychological inner peace. We accepted their invitation and when we visited them we found them to be kind and one could feel that they enjoy familial life, peace and comfort. Hence, I started to find my interest in Islam. It was difficult for me at first because I held many misconceptions about Islam. As we acquire these misconceptions from the mass media giving us poisonous notions every now and then.
My Turkish friend told me that there is an Islamic Center at Lahai, headed by a Muslim German. And that, he is a kind man who has some interesting materials that can be examined by me.
That was how I contacted brother `Abdel Wahid of the Islamic Center. He gave me many books which I read, thoroughly studied and hence, my interest in Islam has increased. When I heard the word: “There is no god but Allah”, I felt that that was what I was looking for. These words gave me a sense of spirituality that was just like nourishment for my heart. When I listened to the Adhan “The Call to Prayer”, I was deeply affected.
And, after reading and discussing the books I converted to Islam, Praise be to Allah!
At the Islamic Center in Lahai, I was just like a child who starts from the very beginning and gradually I forsook my old ideas and I - thanks to Allah - converted to Islam eight years ago. I liked to learn Arabic and more about my religion. So, I traveled to Egypt where I learnt some good Arabic but not to the extent that enables me to speak fluently.
* Dear Brother, can you describe your feelings while you are living in an Islamic Atmosphere and you are yourself a Muslim?
- The most important thing about Egypt is its Islamic Character or Spirit. We found Egyptians to have true familial ties and brotherhood which we lack in the Netherlands. At my home country, each individual lives by himself and only for himself. It is unusual for anyone to do a service for another for nothing. Someone may live, catch a disease and even die and his dead body remains undiscovered for weeks, even months. When the neighbors notice the rotten smell coming out of that house, they call the police who comes to discover the rotten dead body.
As for Egypt, the people are characterized with friendliness and love and they always offer their help. We used to listen to the Adhan (the Call to Prayer) all the time, the matter which created around us a sense of Spirituality and Faith. We used to go to mosques to perform the prayers with many others the matter which gave us a wonderful sense.
In spite of the few hardships we encountered, we loved Egypt so much and it was difficult for us to leave it.
Concerning our studies, Praise be to Allah, my wife and I managed to have two scholarships at Al-Azhar University. Then, we joined the AUC though this university is not the right place to study Islam, we found excellent teachers of Arabic and gradually we learned Arabic grammar and so many Arabic terms.
Praise be to Allah! The month of Ramadan and the `Eid aroused in us special feelings as we were able to meet with many people.
It is amazing about Egyptians that they like to talk to Muslim foreigners and to know how they got to embrace Islam and they inquire about the difficulties they might faced.
When we went back to the Netherlands, we were struck about the people faces as theirs were cold, while in Egypt you might find many poor people but their hearts are spiritually rich.
* You went back to the Netherlands as a Muslim who studied Arabic and the Glorious Qur’an (you and your wife), there should be a mission you feel you have to tackle. Would you please talk to us about your religious activity in Holland?
- After we were back from Egypt we felt we should do anything because we have acquired some Islamic knowledge and manners. And we found happiness and peace and the true spirituality in Islam. We concluded this after we spent a while in a Muslim country and among good Muslims and after we had studied the Glorious Qur’an.
We had many possibilities, especially in what concerns our profession. We also had to talk to others about Islam and to help in solving the problems faced by some pertaining to the matter of religion. We tried to explain to them Islam as the true resort for solving all the problems faced by man. For Allah the Almighty is the Helper and to Him returns everything and He does not forget His believing servants.
As for our profession, I received a telephone call from brother `Abdel Wahid from the Islamic Center in which he told me that there is a number of Islamic Schools here in Holland and some of them have not started yet. After that I phoned one of these schools’ founders. He paid due care about me and my wife because we both were teachers.
A great number of Muslim children attend ordinary schools and of course if you send a Muslim child to a non-Islamic school, he will be educated well, but he will receive nothing of the Islamic Teachings or Instructions. When I was studying Islam, I studied the psychology behind acts of the Prophet: how was he dealing with people and observing the individual differences as we might see him answering someone with what suits him and another with another thing. I have tried to draw a comparison between what I study and what is in the West of psychology to see what I can do in the service of Islam. I think the most important mission we should tackle is to find the missing (from the West’s point of view) link between Islam and science as were shown in the past because they think (the westerners) that Islam has nothing to do with science. We should prove invalid these ideas of theirs about Islam. Besides, there is a great problem which is that we should convince them that the mistakes done by some Muslims have nothing to do with Islam’s Teachings and Instructions. We also should do our best in correcting their misconceptions regarding woman in Islam.
* And now we would like to know the current interests of your honored wife and her role in the service of Islam as a Muslim female in a western society.
- It is so hard for me as a Muslim woman to live in a western country by myself. So, I should look for other Muslim women to visit one another even if some of them were living far away. In such case, we go by train or by car to visit one another.
I have had so many friends, but when I embraced Islam, the style of my life changed as I was guided by Allah the Almighty to His Right Path. I put on the veil as Muslim women are ordered to. Though some of my friends went away from me, I try my best to find a good way to re-contact them, may be one day they be guided to the right path by Allah the Almighty.
You have heard the story of my husband’s life and the sufferings he had before he embraces Islam. Praise be to Allah! Islam has saved him from all the worldly hardships and troubles many other western young men still suffer from such as alcohol and other harmful things.
Men and women suffer from these problems in our society. But, Praise be to Allah! My husband and I live as believing Muslims trying to do what’s ordained for us by Allah the Almighty. We try to teach our children the teachings and instructions of our true religion and to give them the Islamic Orientation. I keep telling them that Allah the Almighty sees us and all what we do and that He is too Near and too Merciful to us.
Thank you both!
